Boheonsa Temple is located in Mt. Bohyun, Gangneung, Gangwondo. As one of the branch temple of Woljungsa, the 4th district Head Temple, Boheonsa Temple is located just under Daegwallyeong and Sunjaryeong.

Its surrounding scenery is execllent due to the high mountains. Daeungjeon, Youngsanjeon, Jiekjeon, Samsunggak, and Geumgangro are well known for their harmony with nature.

Legend about the Foundation of Boheonsa Temple

Boheonsa Temple, which has a legend of Samantabhadra Bodhisattva construngting the temple, was founded by Precept Master Jajang in 650. Also, in 889, it prospered and expanded in appearance under the name of Jijang Seon Center by Great Master Nangwon.

Great Master Nangwon is a great monk who pioneered Sangul mountain faction and inherited Buddhist doctrine from National Preceptor Bumil. After National Preceptor Bumil entered nirvana in 889, Great Master Namwon made the Stupa of Master Bumil and stayed at Buhyunsa with support from Mingyu Alchun.

The Record of Bohyun Pilgrim Site Rennovation

There is Daeungbojeon (Cultural heritage of Gangwondo No.37.), Samsunggak, Youngsanjeon in Boheonsa. The Amitabha Triad in Daeungbojeon(Gangwondo Tangible Cultural Property No. 167.) that were made in the last Joseon Dynasty, have many worshipers because of firendly image to the only Buddhist but also general public. The buildings, including the Daeungjeon, are the earliest temple in Yeongdong province, which is an early architectural style of Joseon Dynasty.

There are also buildings such as Jijangjeon, Geumgangroo, Dongjunggak, Bohyundang, Soosundang, Jijangseonwon (Templestay Building), Mokwoodang, Ogwandang.

Cultural Heritage in Buhyunsa Temple

As for cultural assets at Boheonsa Temple, there are the Pagoda for Master Great Nangwon(Treasure No. 191.) was built in 940, Monument for Master Nangwon(Treasure No. 192.), the Arhat Painting in Buhyunsa (Gangwondo Tangible Cultural Property No. 171.), the wooden seated Bodhisattva statue (Provincial Tangible Cultural Property No. 173.), and Daeungbojeon(Cultural heritage of Gangwondo No. 37.). The Painting of the Vultrue Peak Assembly (1822), the Painting of Ksitigarbha Bodihisattava and ten underworld Kings(1799), and the altar portrait of Amitabha Buddhist painted in 1851 stored at the temple were unfortunately stolen in 1988 and 1991.

The bronze bell recorded as 'The document of big bell of Gangneung Boheonsa on August 1794' in the Gwaneumsa in Gangneung city.
